Deconstructing Your Food

We've talked about the Ketchup Diet, we've preached about being proactive with the Fridge Market, and of course, we've harped about organic ingredients. This week we're going to get you to think outside of the box. What is it that your child likes about a particular food and how can you recreate that essence with what you have? No, we're not talking about chicken made into nuggets then put into a box. We're talking about deconstructing pizza, using basic "fridge market" items, and making it into a knock-out creation that will not only capture that essence of pizza but will make it fit your crazy life on the go.

Eliminating your child's "Ketchup Diet"

Once children get to the age of eating "real" food (generally 12 months and beyond) there begins a trend that involves eating anything as long as it's covered in ketchup. You may notice this particularly with meats - it's their version of barbecue sauce. While there is noting inherently bad about wanting a little dipping sauce to go with your food this does speak to a food behavior: the Ketchup Diet, where they start to refuse eating certain foods without ketchup. TSF is here to help you take control, understand the behavior, and expand their horizons.

Here's a typical scenario: you're pregnant and in the midst of a snack attack, you reach for an extra large box of Cheez-Its.  You lean back and enjoy the cheesy-euphoria, satisfied.  Several months later, as you have started to think about food differently, your 14 month old is stumbling around the house with a snack-trap full of Annie's Organic Cheddar Bunnies. Your pantry has become a cracker haven and you can't decide whether to consolidate all cracker snacks to one brand or keep the "adult" brand and the decidedly more "baby" brand (can your husband be a real man eating bunnie crackers?).  You start to think about ingredients, which brand is healthier, cost, and practicality.  Sure, it's just a cracker, but they are such valuable little commodities to have around.  Then it crosses your mind - why can't I just take control over my cracker destiny and make my own? You've come to the right place.

The Yolkie Dolkie - Baby/Toddler Food

This is a Stork Fork fave.  The Yolkie Dolkie (YD) is a creative way to introduce egg to your baby's diet in a way that can be planned in advance and prepared on-the-fly.  After the one-year-mark, Doctors allow egg yolks to enter your baby's diet, while recommending that you remain cautious about egg whites as egg whites represent the greater risk for egg allergies due to the way our bodies interpret the proteins.  Egg Yolks represent a much safer and nutritious way to introduce eggs to our children as they have no protein only healthy fat, good HDL cholesterol, and a ton of vitamins.   As always check with your doctor especially if there is a history of egg allergies in your family.

Baby Food - Organic Winter Squash

September and October always brings winter squash.  Winter squash is a contradiction in terms because their shapes, tastes, and textures definitely make us think of winter, but these oddly shaped creatures grow during the summer and are harvested at the end.  Yes, they may love to remind us of winter, but make no mistake, these are the lazy beach dwellers of summer (much like the surfers that make up the TSF staff).
